FileCatalyst Workflow 4.9.6 – What’s new?

With FileCatalyst Workflow release 4.9.6 just around the corner, let’s review what has changed. It has been over 7 months since our last release v4.9.5 in June of last year (2015). This update has been long in the works. Don’t let the minor version increment fool you – this release is packed full of updates. First and foremost, v4.9.6 provides an alternative to Java Applets. The list of web browsers that either don’t support or will soon stop supporting Java Applets is growing fast. Now is the time to make a move and provide an alternative file transfer method in FileCatalyst Workflow. Cue TransferAgent: FileCatalyst’s latest web-based file transfer tool. TransferAgent supports our lightning fast UDP-based file transfer acceleration protocol and smoothly handles large files and complex directory structures for both uploads and downloads. While we traditionally synchronise release of updates to our Workflow and Webmail products, this release presents our new TransferAgent feature in the Workflow environment only. Please note that Webmail is now obsolete and as such, only Workflow will contain TransferAgent. Everyone currently using Webmail should consider upgrading to Workflow as soon as possible to take advantage of TransferAgent. Welcome to TransferAgent, the Java Applet replacement in FileCatalyst Workflow.

So what is TransferAgent? TransferAgent is FileCatalyst’s latest innovation in file transfer technology. Available for both Windows and Mac operating systems, it comprises of a desktop application that runs in the system tray on your system and plugs into all the major web browsers. TransferAgent provides local file access and file transfer services to the web page running in the web browser for both upload and download operations. TransferAgent needs only to be installed once on a user’s desktop PC. A prompt to download and install TransferAgent will guide a first time user through the install. After the install, the file transfer functionality embedded in the web page will automatically appear to the end user. After the initial install, user’s web browser is thereby cookied with the install information and a new “filecatalyst://” protocol handler is added to the system. Any future websites that require TransferAgent will then then work automatically.

While TransferAgent is running in your system tray, you can close your web browser or navigate away from the file transfer page while the transfers proceed in the background. Kromě toho, while TransferAgent is transferring files within Workflow, it is also submitting the job information in the background, even if the web browser is closed. Users will have access to the active transfers via their system tray.

Example of the Download Page

While you may note that our Workflow Download page has a fresh look thanks to TransferAgent, the new and improved functionality is most compelling. The recipient can now download files with UDP acceleration without the need of the Java Applet. Kromě toho, the web browser can be closed after the recipient initiates the download. All the files downloaded by the user by default will be placed in a subdirectory of the user’s Downloads folder called “files-from-SenderEmailAddress-TimeStamp”. Of significant note is the fact that the directory structure will be maintained if “Download All Files” button is clicked. This strategy ensures the downloaded files are easy to find. Downloading individual files with UDP acceleration is also now possible. In this version, TransferAgent will appear for both uploading and downloading jobs. Our alternative for File Area Java Applet will be coming later in 2016.

Other changes in v4.9.6

Several other improvements were also made, including:
  • improvements to LDAP/AD integration, where the LDAP/AD proxy account can be used to search the directory for the user who is logging-in.
  • PermaLinks to Order forms for quick access by the end user are now displayed on the form settings.
  • Ability to download the entire help as HTML and other improvements to the help menu.
  • Generate and upload JSON file for the job, so it can be parsed by external applications. For Distribution jobs a shipped JSON or XML file can also be created so external application can be informed when a recipient has picked up the files.
