Ooyala helps deliver content that connects. A US-based subsidiary of the global telecommunications and IT services company Telstra, Ooyala’s comprehensive suite of offerings includes one of the world’s largest premium video platforms, a leading ad service and programmatic platform, and media logistics solutions to improve video production workflows. Built with superior analytics capabilities for advanced business intelligence and a strong commitment to customer success, Ooyala’s industry-leading end-to-end solutions help large-scale broadcasters, operators, media companies, enterprises, and brands build more engaged and more profitable audiences, as well as monetize video and TV with personalized, interactive experiences across any screen. Headquartered in Silicon Valley, Ooyala has offices in New York, Dallas, London, Chennai, Stockholm, Sydney, Tokyo, Singapore, Cologne, Madrid, Paris, and Guadalajara, with sales operations in many other countries across the globe. To accelerate these slow file transfer speeds, Ooyala has integrated FileCatalyst TransferAgent into Ooyala Flex.

Today, live event footage is shot in high-resolution, and resolutions keep getting higher. For editors and loggers to produce content from the footage, they need to be on-site at the event or ship the footage back to head office in a timely fashion. The further the event is located from the production house, the more challenging this becomes. Depending on the type of event, the production team could be in the hundreds of people, which makes transporting an entire team to an event a poor use of both time and money.

Avid supports a distributed deployment where editors can be geographically dispersed from one another, but able to collaborate on media. The Avid Interplay® | Delivery service allows users to transfer files from within an editor’s workspace in MediaCentral or MediaComposer and have the sequences of clips sent to another Interplay system across the world. Since the underlying transfer protocol is FTP, the further the distance apart, the longer it takes to transfer the files. This can be crucial, especially when dealing with live events where time is of the essence.

FileCatalyst’s UDP-based accelerated file transfer solution not only has the ability to send large media files in a matter of minutes, but it also has the ability to transfer growing files, which is critical when shooting live footage. The integration of FileCatalyst’s acceleration technology with Avid’s production asset management solutions streamlines multi-site workflows by enabling editors and producers to easily transfer media, sequences, and shot lists between Interplay workgroups, directly from within Avid MediaComposer.

When it comes to distributed Avid environments, FileCatalyst has developed a plug-in that is installed on Avid Interplay® | Delivery, replacing the default FTP transfer mechanism. This allows users to send files at full line speed across any long-haul network. Avid users are now able to benefit from the advantages of accelerated file transfer using this method.

Use Case

The Ooyala Flex FileCatalyst integration can provide substantial benefits for a number of use cases including, but not limited to:

  • Large multi-national post-production houses with offices spanning multiple countries and continents. The integration can accelerate globally dispersed transfers, resulting in much shorter delivery times.
  • International broadcasters that provide content to a network of worldwide syndication partners. Be it a transcoded piece of footage or raw content, FileCatalyst can deliver the file at speeds hundreds of times faster than traditional methods.

  • Dramatically increased reliability and security for every file transferred
  • Giving editors the ability to work from HQ generates extensive cost savings in terms of shipping and travel
