Moving Files at 10 Gbps

In this webinar FileCatalyst Co-Founder and President John Tkaczewski sits down with special guest Christian Charette, FileCatalyst’s Director of Software Development as he demonstrates our 10 Gbps file transfers and provides an overview of the technology behind these speeds. Christian also gives a great overview of the effects latency and packet loss when using FTP and FTP, and explains how FileCatalyst overcomes these issues.

What & How

FileCatalyst’s accelerated file transfer speeds of 10 up to Gbps are fast enough to move a 30GB file from New York City to Rio in under 30 seconds or deliver the contents of a complete Blu-Ray disk (~24GB) in under 25 seconds. 

A WAN emulator is used to create a variety of different network conditions to show how FileCatalyst works across different links with various amounts of packet loss and latency.

The test was run using:

  • Linktropy setup to simulate a transfer from LA to NY
    • 60 ms of latency
    • 0.1% packet loss

Configurations used for a single transfer at 10Gbps:

  • Server & HotFolder each using 4GB of RAM
  • MTU 9000 (packet 8972 bytes)
  • Blocks: 10MB
  • Number of sender threads: 50
  • Sender sockets: 5
  • Receiver sockets: 3
  • RTT congestion control (because the test scenario utilizes packet loss)
  • Congestion control set to 7 (more aggressive)
